What is Hand Dancing?

Hand Dancing is exactly what the name says it is, it is the form of dancing only with the use of your hands.

This is typically done while sitting at a wooden table, so the sounds made by tapping on it are loud and clear.

The form of dance was popularized by Suzanne Clearly and Peter Harding, a London based Irish Dancing pair known as Up & Over It.

"…when we use to go to the competitions when we were kids, we used to practice (our routines) on our hands before we got to the competition. So we thought it would be a great thing to show the world." Suzanne Clearly

The Youtube Sensation

The two teamed with film maker Johnny Reed to make set of videos showing a sample of their routines, which were to promote their upcoming show at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, which were uploaded to Youtube between June and August 2009.

The videos recieved little attention, however their video Hand Dance was one of the popular ones, even after the duo became recognized in the media. The original Hand Dance video currently has 561,957 views as of writing. In Comparison, their other routine, "Chav Ballerinas" has only 43,318 views.

Their attention increased rapidly when they created a hand dance routine to the song "We No Speak Americano" by Yolanda Be Cool & D Cup, on the 25th July 2010. The video has reached over 7.43 million views as of writing.

Up & Over It, with their Hand Dancing, became a internet hit, and the duo have been interviewed by ABC, do live shows, and even did a commercial for McDonald's.

While Up & Over It still use more traditional forms of modern dance in their performances, their Hand Dancing remains their most popular routines, even getting them a segment recently in the 2011 season of Britain's Got Talent.

Variations and Imitators

While their aren't that many, users from Youtube created their own versions of the "We Speak No Americano". Unlike Up & Over It, these versions are mostly met with negative responses, either with criticising comments or a large amount of Dislikes. Commenters usually saying either that they don't get it, or that they are poor imitations of the original video.
