Shattered Steel

Yet another game from the '90s, this time the very first one done by BioWare: Shattered Steel. Developed after the success of Activision's Mechwarrior 2, Shattered Steel was built using voxel graphics and featured destructible terrain. It was also built for MS-DOS right as Windows 95 was starting to gain traction.

Looking back at this game, one can see a lot of influences that were later exhibited in the Mass Effect series. In particular, there are a lot of similarities with the enemies to the main villains in Bioware's later series.

The game came hot on the heels of Operation Desert Storm and generated controversy at the time, which only served to sell even more copies of the game. The timing with real world events was not intended, as the game had been in some form of development since the mid '80s.

It was ported onto everything from Amiga, to DOS (pictured here), to Gameboy, and many other systems. The smashing success resulted in several sequels: Jungle Strike, Urban Strike, Soviet Strike, and Nuclear Strike. As with many franchises of the '90s, it eventually faded into obscurity, despite each iteration having strong sales figures. Several fan made remakes have sprung up over the years, but none has achieved the same success as the original.
