Despite the name and premise, Desert Strike was closer to a strategy game rather than an action game. With limited fuel and weapons, one had to leverage resources carefully to achieve mission objectives. The game came hot on the heels of Operation Desert Storm and generated controversy at the time, which only served to sell even more copies of the game. The timing with real world events was not intended, as the game had been in some form of development since the mid '80s.

It was ported onto everything from Amiga, to DOS (pictured here), to Gameboy, and many other systems. The smashing success resulted in several sequels: Jungle Strike, Urban Strike, Soviet Strike, and Nuclear Strike. As with many franchises of the '90s, it eventually faded into obscurity, despite each iteration having strong sales figures. Several fan made remakes have sprung up over the years, but none has achieved the same success as the original.
