Lots of people want nicer cars, fancier jewelry, better fashion, etc. It's a way of communicating to others certain things about you, namely that you have a surplus of resources (time, money, or both) and that you have the sensibilities to be more refined than the masses. There's nothing wrong with that. The problem is that social status is a treadmill. The journey doesnt end. If everyone on your block has a Honda Accord, your Corvette convertible is looking pretty sweet. But once your neighbors upgrade their cars, too, suddenly you need a Ferrari just to maintain your distinctiveness Here's the kicker: SJWs are just people who achieve social status through moralizing. Typically they dont have jobs, or at least not well-paying jobs. They arent popular or trendy enough to be big into fashion. And they arent good at sports or video games. So how do they show their social status? Moralizing They dont seek to be accepting of minorities. They seek to be more accepting of minorities than you. Their crusade to change society is a treadmill. Whenever a certain minority group is generally tolerated by the masses, that's group's usefulness to SJWs has expired. The SJW cannot distinguish herself and communicate that she is above everyone else if her opinion is shared by most people. Thus the SJW is always on the frontier, advocating increasingly bizarre extremes, and becoming fascinated by the plight of the struggling minority which must be defined in an ever-more specific way, such as disabled trans women of color Furthermore, the unique nature of online communities is that they are decidedly fractal. Acceptance of transexuals might be less tharn ubiquitous in America as a whole, but SJWs dont hang out with America as a whole. They surround themselves with people who already accept transexuals, which means to be different in that group, they must advocate for the acceptance of disabled transexuals At some point, they then cut off contact with most of their old friends, and eventually find themselves surrounded only by people who agree with them. Although I think there is also an element of adolescence to that as well. Specifically, I think it attracts young people who dont really know how to define themselves. They are kind of like everyone else, and as you mentioned want to feel in some way unique, so they adopt an identity that seems interesting to them. Same as someone in their teens might suddenly decide their a dj or start wearing a fedora to stand out, they become otherkin, adopt a strange sexuality, or decide to identify as a different gender to make themselves somehow unique. While I know you have to be careful saying something like, "Being gay is a choice." as a guy whose been in relationships on both sides of the fence I've got to say, sometimes it is a choice. Then from there it follows the same path of becoming insular and self referential. Because it's something they ve simply adopted to define themselves they see no attachment to their current definitions and change them when necessary and so the deeper they entrench themselves into the community the more extreme they must become for their identity to remain unique.
