Overview
The August 2024 Chase Bank ATM Glitch refers to a rumor spread on X / Twitter and TikTok in late August 2024 about a supposed money glitch at Chase Bank ATMs that allowed people to deposit a large check and have funds available for withdrawal immediately. The unverified rumor caused large amounts of people to gather at ATMs owned by Chase Bank to verify the money glitch claims, which sparked viral videos, memes and jokes on social media as it spread online. Chase Bank reportedly quickly fixed the bug and has since alerted people not to indulge in the check fraud scam.

On August 29th, 2024, X[1] user @ionfeellnun posted a picture of a Chase Bank ATM showing an increased deposit fund availability of more than $80,000 (seen below), captioning it, "This run been personal." The post suggested a possible glitch that allowed more money to appear in the user's bank account, amassing more than 7 million views and 57,000 likes in two days.
Developments
On September 1st, 2024, a spokesperson for Chase Bank told the NY Post[2] that the "glitch" was quickly fixed and warned customers that "regardless of what you see online, depositing a fraudulent check and withdrawing the funds from your account is a fraud, plain and simple."

Several TikTok and X users started to post viral videos showing the Chase Bank glitch working, incentivizing other netizens to try the scam at Chase's ATMs.
For instance, on August 31st, 2024, X[3] user @scubaryan_ uploaded a video (seen below) of a crowd gathered in front of a Chase Bank ATM, captioning their post, "people are currently lined up outside a Chase bank in New York trying to do the new viral glitch to get free money." Memes and jokes about the rumored glitch also became a viral topic on social media as users posted about it. For example, on September 1st, 2024, TikTok[4] user @theluncheonlawyer posted a video calling out people trying the Chase Bank glitch, saying, "That's not a life hack, that's robbery." The video (seen below) amassed roughly 2 million plays and 410,000 likes in a day.
