In February 2024, filming of the superhero film Superman, based on the eponymous comic books character, began, with James Gunn directing. The film stars American actor as Superman, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, with Edi Gathegi, Anthony Carrigan and Nathan Fillion attached. The film is set to become the first film in the upcoming DC Universe, a reboot of the DC Extended Universe franchise that run from 2013 to 2023.

On December 19th, 2024, the official teaser trailer for the film premiered. The trailer (shown below) accumulated over 18 million views on YouTube^[1] in less than 15 hours.

Online Reactions

The December 2024 trailer was followed by online discussions and various memes. The visual similarity between character Lex Luthor, portrayed by Nicolas Hoult, and comedian Den Henschel, whose characters went viral in 2024, became a popular subject for jokes. For example, on December 19th, 2024, X^[2] user @Shinkageryo made a post highlighting the similarity that received over 8,400 reposts and 202,000 likes in one day (shown below).
