I mean Nintendo Power was a beloved magazine and it was just Nintendo supplied marketing everyone knew that, but was a kind of line between selling something and outright demeaning your audience. People in gaming were well aware of that overlap between "journalism" and marketing, since after all it's an entertainment medium. You get the same thing in music or movie journalism as well But you also had more to the context. You also had the long-running and seemingly unending smear campaign by mainstream media against gaming, since it's origins. And you had the resurgence of politically correct ideologies, fueled by social media, that had already created controversies among other communities, notably atheism and comics What happened with Gamergate is that the gaming journalism outlets, or at least several notable ones, outright turned on their demos, all seemingly in the name of political ideologies, and it was just the last straw. To make matters worse, the mainstream media just ran with that as well, where now gamers weren't just the violence obsessed social outcasts, but misogynistic racists as well.
