Overview
Son Of Indonesian Tax Official Beating A Man refers to news about a man named Mario Dandy Satrio beating another man into a coma, allegedly because of claims about his love life. Since the perpetrator is known to be the son of an Indonesian tax official, many Indonesians started an anti-tax movement.
Background
On February 21st, 2023, Twitter[1] user @LenteraBangsaa_ uploaded tweets of what led up to the event. It started one day earlier, when the victim named David received calls from his ex-girlfriend, who wanted to give back a student ID card. Then, he shared his latest location with her as a meeting point at his friend's house, Later a car with four people appear, and then two of them started to beat David until he fell unconscious. The tweet received more than 7,700 retweets and 25,000 likes in one week.
On February 23rd, 2023, Twitter[2] user @ZoelHelmiLubis1 uploaded footage of moments when David was beaten and received a kick to his head even after he was unconscious (shown below) (warning, graphic content).

Indonesian news site Kompas[13] published an article explaining the alleged reason why David was targeting, stating that his ex-girlfriend claimed she was treated badly by him.
A few days later, several Indonesian news sites such as Tempo[3] revealed that a culprit who'd beaten David was named Mario Dandy Satrio, the son of Indonesian tax official Rafael Alun Trisambodo. Later, the Minister of Finance, Sri Mulyani Indrawati, removed him.
Online Reactions
After it was discovered that the perpetrator is the son of a tax official, many Indonesians got angry and started an anti-tax movement in memes. For example, on February 23rd, 2023, Instagram[4] user @4maze uploaded an image with a satirical message reminding people to pay taxes using Mario's photo with his Jeep Rubicon. The post received more than 11,000 likes in four days. On the next day, Facebook[5] page "Indonesian Hoaxes" reposted the image and received more than 5,400 reactions and 1,500 shares in three days (shown below, left). On Februrary 25th, 2023, Facebook[6] user Dandhy Dwi Laksono uploaded an image depicting people who pay taxes with only a motorbike, comparing it with Mario's Rubicon photo. The post received more than 2,800 reactions and 525 shares in two days. On the same day, Facebook[7] page "Partai kemakmuran bersama suprabapak" reposted the image and received more than 17,000 reactions and 1,100 shares in two days (shown below, right).
On February 25th, 2023, Facebook[8] user Farukito uploaded an image imagining people paying Zakat, the pillar of charity in Islam, rather than tax. The post received 455 reactions and 828 shares in two days (shown below).
Motor Club Disbandment
On February 26th, 2023, the Minister of Finance, Sri Mulyani Indrawati, used her Facebook[9] and Instagram[10] official accounts to upload posts sharing her disappointment after she learned that another tax official, Suryo Utomo, was riding a MoGe (Motor Gede, Eng. Bike brand like Harley Davidson) with the community named BlastingRijder club. Later she decided to disband the community. The post received more than 9,800 reactions and 1,100 shares, and 103,000 likes, respectively (shown below, left). On the same day, Facebook[11] user Arfan Achyar uploaded screenshot from the online shop Olx that showing many big bikes has been sold to the site, only a few hours after Sri Mulyani disbanded the motor club. The post received 272 reactions and 554 shares. On February 27th, 2023, Facebook[12] page "Kementrian Humor Indonesia" reposted the image and received more than 7,900 reactions and 2,400 shares in less than a day (shown below, right).
Straits Times Thumbnail Error
On February 25th, 2023, Singaporean media Straits Times[14] published an article about the event but used the wrong photo, inadvertently depicting an Indonesian content creator GadgetIn as the victim due to the fact that he has a similar name to David's. On the next day, GadgetIn via his Facebook[15] page uploaded the now-deleted tweet from Strait Times official Twitter showing his photo as an article thumbnail. The post received more than 21,000 reactions and 4,200 shares in one day (shown below).
