Despite being stabbed, shot, and hit with grenade shrapnel totaling 21 severe injuries, he managed to kill/injure 24 German soldiers and rescued a member of his unit. He was the first American soldier to receive France's highest award for bravery, Croix de Guerre, and in 2015, The White House also awarded him the Medal of Honor in a posthumous ceremony.
