(please bare with me as I am also researching this topic and it's very new… but I'd appreciate any help/input!!!
sorry it's taking so long… this is all really new to me…. just trying to bring some culture…. I'd love to hear about any other political memes dealing with social movements + the involvement of new media as a form of protest vs. a tool for nation states to control their populations and their domestic as well as foreign interests)…

but here's my point:
The Iranian "Green/Twitter/Soft/Reformist Revolution" was nothing but a big way for the U.S. and Islamic Republic to troll all of us about the power of media. This is a meme because this is a continuation of what happened to other forms of media related to modern day's only theological revolution, bringing to power the Islamic Republic of Iran in 1979. This entirely new political system was steered by the hands of the clergy, mostly through mass cassette tapes which were transported en mass by Ayatollah Khomeini in order to gain his populist, charismatic image (macro? see below) in the eyes of the people in order to get Iranians to vote "yes" to a literal "yes" vs. "no" vote on the choice of governance by Islam, when no real viable alternative seemed to be around.

• see below IMAGE 1: here I would like to put a timeline of pictures of Ayatollah Khomeini ranging from 1979 (his coming to power) towards the pictures which are now put up in Iran of him….) most of them are large billboard-sized paintings (among them are "Down to the US" * need images*)..

In the beginning, Khomeini was always seen as a stern figure who's face lurked in all the store-front windows. But now due to the restlessness of the very large, very young, and very unemployed youth under alcohol prohibition, the government has at least gradually depicted Khomeini as smiling, instead. Gotta have SOME spice in your life, no?

IS THIS INTERNET MEME Helping or Hindering the Movement?
despite the massive media response to Iran's disputed 2009 presidential elections, the international "outreach" has seemed to remain on the internet, and is no longer in the streets.

Neda Agha-Soltan's video was claimed to be one of the most successful viral videos (need source… was seen in a video interview… anyone know what I'm talking about?), people are becoming more educated about Iran the more they see nimble hands forming peace-signs in droves rather than mysterious brown eyes somewhere in the folds of a black chador.

And now, as a contemporary Iranian artist stated on theweekingreen.org "the government is now afraid of her color", as she holds up her green bracelet.

Whether reformist or green, it is a meme.
