OPENTOWORK Jason Roeder. 3rd+ Copywriter/Comedy Writer/Editor/... 1w. + Follow I immediately remove my shoes and socks upon entering any interview. Why do I do this? If they say nothing, I know they will not enforce even the most fundamental dress code. I cannot work in such chaos. If they tell me to put them back on, I know conformity reigns in this workplace, and my creativity will suffer. I cannot work there. If they tell me to put one sock and shoe on, I know they value balance and compromise. Only then will I work there.

He completed three times as many tasks as the rest of the team. The best algorithm specialist had no ability to work in a team. His sense of self-importance was off the charts. The best administrator rarely bathed, and his house was a mess. Female colleagues complained about his odor. The top managers held a meeting to address the issue, but it didn't help. The best programmer, who could write in any programming language, was a notorious womanizer and alcoholic. He only worked at night. But I can't recall a single problem he couldn't solve. There was also a great support engineer I knew who left to join a monastery and became a monk (yes, really). And a talented designer who didn't know how to organize files on his computer. He kept thousands of files in the root directory of his "C" drive. (Yes, files - this was before Figma existed.) I could count on these people in the most difficult situations. Working with them was easy. The takeaway: You can't change a grown person. You can't change their character or bad habits.
