Every once in awhile, Ill have an empty room that just contains a potted plant. The first time, it launched itself at the players who investigated it. The second time, it launched AWAY from the players investigating it, hitting someone outside of the previous range. The third time it showed up, the potted plant was fine, but the pillar mimic it was sitting on was not It's gotten to a point where I really have to step up my game with it >There's two doors. One to the south, one to the east." >Open south door >"You see a 10 by 10 foot room with a table and a potted plant sitting harmlessly on top of it" >"NOPE! F--- this! I'm not even going into the room.I close the door and enter the door on the east >"Alright, you touch the doorknob and that's when the door mimic attacks" >6 rounds of fighting later >"Okay, you slay the door mimic. The wall falls apart and reveals 5 feet back another door >"FINALLY!I open the door an-..." >The SECOND door mimic attacks!" I won't consider the gag to have been run until I get them into a state where if they see a potted plant, they just crouch into a fetal position Friend friend. Youve pushed them a little too far Next time they go in and see a potted plant Trust me. Just to f--- with them Its just a normal room with a potted plant in it Make it the only way deeper into the dungeon, force them to confront their fear of the plant, watch them squirm, all the while you knowing, knowing that for once, the plant isn't there to f--- them The players will go through, you just have to do the right thing And then, the next time they see a potted plant M------------ ain't gonna know what the f--- is on anymore, the last few times you taught them around pots bad things happen, but if nothing happens? Their point of reference is thrown off And then a few sessions later Potted plant room. Door slams shut behind them Hourglass on the table Stare at them.
