This was a Reddit post on the subreddit /r/whatisthisthing, a subreddit for help identifying unknown or mystery objects. Currently, it is the top post of /r/whatisthisthing. The OP "asked" about what the "explosive" object was, and the post reached over 72K upvotes. Shortly afterwards, the OP mentioned in a comment that it was a bamboozle. This image was reposted 18 times.

Discovery as a bamboozle

Shortly after the post reached over 50K upvotes and went into /r/all and front page, the OP announced that it was a bamboozle.

The comment wrote:

Thank you guys for being part of the biggest reddit bamboozle of 2018, it was all just a made up story to make your day a little more exciting!

After a moderator saw the comment, the OP was banned from /r/whatisthisthing. The moderator's comment was stickied and can be viewed here.

Currently, it is unknown what the object actually was. It could be a model rocket, or a case for an empty explosive.
