This meme started on the sixth of july in 2011. The meme started because of the game Runescape, a MMORPG created by Jagex. In the update released in previous day, The quest "Salt in the wound" was added. The update recieved much criticism from users. The quest however ended ubruptly with the boss, The Slug Queen, being crushed by a pillar. This resulted in a forum thread called "Salt in the meme." where users took to pillar based jokes.
