Nancy Gordon There's a new page in the story of cartoons, one much more mature and extreme than the Bugs Bunny and Mickey Mouse adventures you and I have grown up with. The latest in this trend of "action cartoons" or "animes" is Homestruck, created by Andrew Hussy. In Homestruck, four kids, Jon, Rosie, David, and Jane, use their computers to travel to the mystical land of Skya. The name of the series comes from "Home", they all start off in the normal world, in their houses before going to Skya, and "Struck", which means all the high- octane fighting they have to do. Skya, it seems, is under attack by a nefarious gang of criminals called the Midnight Crew, and their numbers are in the thousands! Their leader is a mob-boss type called Doc Scratch. The Midnight Crew will stop at nothing to find a legendary artifact called the Derse, which can be used to summon a giant monster called Lord British. The kids are Skya's only hope at fighting off the evil Doc Scratch, but they aren't alone. They have help from a group of magical aliens called the Trolls. The Trolls come from a planet called Prospit, and are all considered outcasts for having different colored blood. That's right, this cartoon has blood, and lots of it! The Trolls do not do any fighting at all, being a peaceful race, and are hiding from the Midnight Crew, but are still very helpful to the four kids. This cartoon is an action-packed thrill ride for sure, but is very mature. It's a welcome and unique approach to cartoons and I hope it sets a trend for more animes like it!
