Trap
Traps are Gay : G - irls A-nd Y -ou should respect them.
![
This is one way that lots of trangender anime fans look at this situation. Yes we are part of the LGBT community and therefore, in internet bro slang, GAY. However, the sort of queer we are is above, beyond, and transcends the boundaries crossing over into being a woman. At least for all practical day to day social purposes, a woman.

Otokonoko
is the word used in Japanese for these people. Literally translated it means "mans daughter". Over there people who we might term cross dressers, drag queens, as well as full post op transsexuals may use this word. "Trap" characters as they are known in the west are a subset of otokonoko who are not drawn to be obvious thus leaving transphobic western men feeling trapped. It is important to remember in fiction and in real life Transgender CD TV or TS women are not doing it to "trap" you. In the case of manga and anime, it would be the artist trying to trap you if that is indeed their motive

It may just be that the artist of these particular works like transwomen / otokonoko, however they self identifiy and want to include them in their world.

Tensai Expains it all. Otoko no ko "traps" are not boys or men.
![
A frame from episode 2 of Nanana's buried treasure where a character Tensai Ikkyū explains that Daruku is not a boy.

Nanana's Buried treasure is unique in that it tried in a non overbearingly PC way to explain to people what an otoko no ko is. While no part of that word or what she says means he (see video) the translation "He's a trap" says it using the vernacular of western anime fans, many of whom, it seems, see folks like Daruku exclusively in terms of their own perception, gender norms and sexuality. While clearly Japanese Otaku do not see it that way.

Trap
Shimone chan the official Otoko no ko (trap) of Shimotsuma-city, Ibaragi Prefecture
![She is probably the greatest otoko no ko (trap) character ever to never be heard of in the west. She does not appear in any anime or manga but instead is the official mascot of a city in Japan, Shimotsuma-City, Ibaragi Prefecture. It would be like if a midsize western city had a trans woman as the official icon.
The reason many otaku think she is meant to be an otoko no ko is because of her wings, which have a coloration similar to the male sex of Japan's national butterfly, sasakia charonda, the Great Purple Emperor. Shimotsuma is in the region which is that butterfly's natural habitat.
Male left and female right. Note the coloration of the wings.

Shimone note the coloration of her wings which is more like that of the male.
Official word from the city.
According to the city of Shimotsuma Shimone is genderless, at least that is how google translate translates it. The truth is the concept of Otoko no ko does not translate well into Euro-American culture other than to place it under the transgender umbrella. This link is to a website that looks similar to KYM and Shimones entry on it, it is all in Japanese (https://dic.pixiv.net/a/%E3%82%B7%E3%83%A2%E3%83%B3%E3%81%A1%E3%82%83%E3%82%93) (Google Translation).
