Announcement Of 'Spider-Man' Spin-Off Movie With 'Madame Web' Starring Dakota Johnson Ignites Social Media Buzz

The former Fifty Shades of Grey actor Dakota Johnson has been announced as the choice to play the character Madame Web in an upcoming Spider-Man spinoff movie, likely based on the continued idea of the Spider-Verse from the two animated movies by Sony.

Following the surprise announcement, the news brought up a lot of speculation on behalf of fans as to what the plot of the movie could be, and if there would be any connection to previous movies or the MCU.

Dakota Johnson as Madame Web feels right to me. She’s one of few stars who seems to move the needle these days and she’s coming off of the best movie at Sundance. Nice get by Sony, which isn’t done making moves in the SPUMC.

Fans of Spider-Man over the past few decades became immediately excited at this announcement, not necessarily for Dakota Johnson, but because Madame Web was introduced in a named film title for the first time. The character has been a fan favorite for decades, as she was originally voiced by the wife of Stan Lee in the Spider-Man cartoon series. Given the character's unique relation to Spider-Man lore, there are a lot of potential avenues and ways the character's introduction and film could go.

On top of this is the question of which version of the character Johnson would be playing, as there have been a few different iterations and people to use the moniker, since the main character people most associate Madame Web with is blind. The character's support-oriented hero setup, combined with the lack of content, has some people taking shots at both the character and Johnson for taking on the role.

Due to Madame Web’s old age, medical condition & never actively fighting any villains in the comics, it is said that it’s possible the live-action ‘MADAME WEB’ film, starring Dakota Johnson, could turn into something else.
