'Blue MAGA' Hats Bring Twitter Together, United In Cringe

In the final days of the Donald Trump presidency, Twitter users have discovered one last cringey offshoot of the president's Make America Great Again slogan in the form of blue hats that read "Made America Great Already."

Democrats have famously struggled to come up with a good counter to Trump's marquee slogan all the way back to Hillary Clinton's infamous effort, "America is great because America is good." However, these hats are not the work of a Democratic Party marketing strategist but rather an entrepreneur named Sampson Daruvalla.

When the hats hit social media late last week, Twitter users were agog at the marketing. "MAGA" has become a harsh trigger among many Americans, as the slogan has been repeated at incendiary Trump rallies and made appearances at the numerous counter-protests to the George Floyd protests this summer. Many Twitter users were content with never seeing any configuration of "Make X Y Again," much less in favor of President-elect Joe Biden.

It's unclear why Daruvalla's December 3rd tweet, in particular, took off. According to Entrepreneur, who caught up with Daruvalla, his company "Made America Great Already LLC" has been in operation for two years but only recently caught Twitter users' attention. Daruvalla is a FEMA staffer who operates the company on the side, and while he's aware of the negative attention his hats have gotten, he says it's been a boon for his business.

"It's funny because usually, the people who comment are the haters. The ones that love it are the ones going straight to the site and are buying the hat," he said.
