It's been three years since Waluigi's Smash Snub was one of the top Super Smash Brothers Ultimate memes. It came at a time when Smash proudly announced Everyone Is Here as a fighter, but Waluigi, the villainous buddy of Wario and star of countless Super Mario party titles, was relegated to the lowly role of "Assist Trophy." Three years and now twelve DLC fighters later, the dream of Waluigi in Smash is dead.

The huge gaming news of the day is that the final fighter slot in Ultimate went to Sora from Kingdom Hearts. The announcement appears to be one of the most universally beloved of the Ultimate DLC era, as Sora has long been desired by fans who doubted if it could ever happen because of Kingdom Hearts' association with Disney IPs.

But one winner—in this case, Sora—means countless losers, and for many, the most heartbreaking loser was Waluigi.

It seems people have attached a great deal of emotion to Waluigi's Smash snub. At the time of the "Everyone Is Here!" trailer, Washington Post writer Gene Park published a tongue-in-cheek lamentation over Waluigi's absence.

"Suddenly, 17 minutes into the presentation, Waluigi makes an appearance. And it is yet another affront to decency. Waluigi is a mere “assist” character. Assist trophies are basically soulless effigies of other characters that players can pick up, bringing the depicted creature to life for mere seconds. They’re golems."

This sort of hyperbolic sympathy with Waluigi's plight has lingered through Ultimate's lifespan, and today marked the official, final nail in the coffin for Waluigi's Smash dreams.

There's always next game, Waluigi. May Smash players WAH with you soon.
