Why would Vlad’s motives be a mystery? Sure he was a really cruel ruler with all those impalements and his habit to dine during the executions, but these were just his means to suppress the rivaling boyars and to keep the invading Ottomans out of his country.
Also, the Unabomber having flawless motives is really… flawed.
