"Janissaries in the Toilet is an anti-postermodern novel written in 1968 by Whittaker Thurmond. A prominent anthropologist, Thurmond was opposed to the postmodern idea that culture primarily affected morals and certain standards, and supported the idea that something being “arbitrary” in nature did not happen. The book takes place as a series of conversations between a narrator and their companions, a scientist and a therapist. The scientist, seeking to prove that man’s nature can be overcome, creates a monster from dead and living bodies. When the monster begins to exhibit increasingly erratic behavior, which the scientist attributes to it “overcoming nature”, the therapist takes the time to try and prove otherwise, and attempt to “cure” the monster through psychology. The tone of the novel is intentionally ambiguous, with equal possibilities showing that the narrator could either be the monster or simply a third party. The book’s title comes from the idea that no man, however strong or enlightened, is able to escape their fundamental needs: “Every Spartan in a bed, every Janissary in a toilet”."
