These traits, which they called "infant schema," are common in mammalian babies, including humans. Since then, studies have shown that images of babies and animals can be made to seem cuter by lengthening their foreheads and shortening their snouts. What's going on inside our brain when we see an infant, puppy or baby lemur with those features? It sets off a chemical reaction that motivates us to hug, protect give a toy to the cuter one. Those traits can also provoke a weirder response. In recent years, researchers have identified a phenomenon they call "cute aggression." It makes us want to squeeze, pinch or bite the things we find adorable - possibly as our brain's way of keeping us from becoming overwhelmed by all the cuteness. So when you see Baby Yoda or your friend's puppy and feel the urge to not only take care of them but also maybe squeeze them as hard as you can, don't worry; you're not the only one.
