I think if anything it's reflective of the fanbase having gotten too big too quickly when New Leaf and especially New Horizons came out, which combined with Web 2.0's model deliberately encouraging vitriol for the sake of greater user engagement and ad revenue led to the AC fanbase's previous "chill" reputation dissolving relatively quickly.
