The Kuomintang, lead by Chiang Kai-Shek, started the anti-communist Shanghai massacre which broke the KMT and CCP alliance and was the catalyst for the civil war in mainland China
They were also responsible for the February 28 massacre in Taiwan that killed thousands, following it up with 38 years of martial law known in as the White Terror, the world's longest period of martial law until Syria outlasted it with 48 years.
I'm not trying to call the Chinese communists the good guys here, but it wasn't quite a "black and white" situation. More of a "black and black"
Also, democracy is inherently a Western concept which had little to no presence in China's history, and after everything that happened in the late 19th century, it's a rather big can of political worm.
Yes, I know that Communism is also a western concept, but that was considered a "relatively" smaller can of worms.
