At first it was the boiler room malfunction to detonate the entire station. Once they claimed a scientist that had information about the lab's existence, it wanted to destroy the lab in order to keep the SR-388 parasites alive. Then it was grabbing Nightmare, who had enough firepower to either clear through sector 6's security, or at least to sector 4's security room. Finally, once the SA-X gains security clearance shortly after you, the X use the security robot B.O.X. as BAIT in an attempt to kill two birds with one stone, and send you jettisoned with the secret lab when you eventually find the lab. (It reveals itself only when you trigger the alarm because it was waiting for you to find that first) The X also knew that it could pretty much assure only one route for you to take as well once you took the bait. There's also the possibility the SA-X was attempting to steal the ship at some point when all that failed. Its motivation to killing the omega was probably irrelevant to your humanity to survive, or biology killing the Metroid. It wanted at least one method of breaking free. but the animals either discovered it at some point, or the evolving metroid first. The animals turned on the auto pilot and the computer booked it from there until it was safe to bring you back. Samus was only a secondary threat at best pretty much all that time.

I'm going to assume you never played Metroid Fusion.

The short version is:
There's this flying slime creatures that are super parasites called "X Parasite" that can enter your body, copy your memory + genetic information, kills you and then can take your form and mind.
This creatures were in a space station and manage to kill everyone.
And Samus was in charge to solve this problem.
There's also this creatures called "Metroid" that are the natural predator of the X parasite.
The image above theory is that the X parasite were able to come up with a plan to kill the metroid + Samus + getting out of the space station. Proofing that the X were super intelegent creatures capable of long term planning.

That's what it means.
