She was deaf as well iirc. Maybe not the best protagonist if they wanted musical numbers but it would have been cool.

Simple, make part of the deal that she gets her hearing back. Many possibilities resulting from that, ie fear of losing her hearing, fear that no one will like her anymore, etc.
