I don't think this is anything new, Ariel's sisters all had different hair colors and the direct-to-video prequel revealed that Ariel's mom looked a lot like her, same hair color and everything, so maybe original cartoon Triton had a harem as well. Either that or he's Atlantean Henry the 8th.
