*Supper Mario Broth @MarioBrothBlog In the intro to Super Mario Galaxy, a Toad trapped in a crystal changes expressions from happy when Mario is near to sad when he isn't, creating the expression that he is still conscious inside the crystal and is rejoicing at Mario's presence and despairing at his absence. Mario is near the Toad Mario is further from the Toad The Toad is happy, as though relieved to see Mario The Toad is sad, as though concerned that he can't see Mario anymore The technical explanation for this is that the crystal and Toad within it change between a high-polygon and low-polygon version based on how close the camera, and thus Mario, is to them. It appears that the expression assigned to the high-polygon Toad is different than the low-polygon one, creating this effect. Internal filenames that call Luigi "intrusive" and a "busybody", and unused text, suggest that Luigi was originally intended to be annoying the player with persistent begging to switch. In Super Mario Galaxy 2, during World 3, Luigi appears on Starship Mario and announces that he will be waiting in certain galaxies to take over for Mario. In the game's code, these instances of Luigi that ask Mario to switch are called "LuigiIntrusively", which suggests Luigi was supposed to be persistent, stubbom or aggravating in his request to switch places with Mario. Finally, there is one place in the code where this Luigi is referred to as "Busybody Luigi" instead. A busybody is a person who pries into or meddles in the affairs of others, which also suggests Luigi was supposed to be agitating the player in some way. In the finished game, this aspect of Luigi's personality was removed.

While unused variables are common, what makes this notable is that for his appearance in Super Mario Galaxy 2, this was changed to "4" despite remaining unused. The significance of this is unknown.
