They can, but they're much slower at it than humans. One of humanity's unique feats is that we can use our feets feet to move backwards consistently faster than almost any other animal. Animals evolve to be the best at moving in the direction they intend (typically forwards), but since we're fully evolved to be bipedal and upright, our mobility backwards is almost the same as it is forwards. We might not have the spring-loaded legs of other land animals, but at least we can dodge like a motherfucker.
