I Wanna Be The Guy is a independently created video game created by Michael “Kayin” O’Reilly. The game is notorious online for it’s extremely high difficulty and the large number of deaths caused by this. Created in the style of oldschool 8-bit NES games, the game incorporates a number of sprites and music tracks from other video games.

Kayin has stated that the inspiration for the game came after playing the japanese flash game Jinsei Owata no Daibōken (人生オワタ\(^o^)/の大冒険)[1] from the Japanese text board site 2channel, a similarily hard platform game featuring surprise deaths and references to classic video games. After playing it, O’Reilly attempted to try and create his own game to beat the original.

Q: Why is this game so fucking hard?

A: A whim, really. I played a 2chan flash game that was stupid hard and thought “Hm, I can do better”. I needed a practice project. It just happened to grow into a big game.[2]

The game was then released for download in October 2007. Oddly enough, the version of Jinsei Owata no Daibōken Kayin played was an unfinished version. The final version of the game actually used levels from I Wanna Be The Guy for it’s final section, and even included The Kid as the final boss of the game.

Let’s Play

Due to its high difficulty and infamy among gamers, IWBTG has become one of the most popular subjects for Let’s Plays . Playthroughs of the game tend to remain unedited to show the large number of deaths and increasingly frustrated reactions of the player.

Super Meat Boy

The Kid is featured in a unlockable character in the platforming video game Super Meat Boy, alongside a number of other characters from independently created video games. Much like in his original game, he is able to perform a double jump, and the level and its opening animation played to unlock him are themed after the original game, featuring large portions of walls covered in spikes and other familiar features. Fittingly, he is generally considered to be the hardest character to unlock in the game.
