Werecapybara is a drawing of a human-shaped capybara shared on X / Twitter and Instagram in October 2021. The drawing was popularized as a reaction image meme in the following years, typically paired with the caption "As A Brazilian," being mostly used by Brazilians in social media posts that mention their country or culture.
Origin
The original artwork used in the "As A Brazilian" meme was posted on X[1] by the artist @TFiddlerArt, who drew a capybara inspired by a werewolf design, calling it "werebapybara." The post (shown below, left), amassed over 9,800 likes and 2,000 retweets in three years. On April 10, 2022, iFunny[2] user @Jr_Raffa_2022 uploaded the werecapybara artwork (shown below, right) paired with the phrase "as a Brazilian."
Spread
Online, the image has been commonly used as a reaction meme by Brazilians on social media every time their country or culture is mentioned in a post. For example, on January 30th, 2024, X[3] user @WinterNoctis replied to a tweet comparing Woody Woodpecker popularity with other cartoon characters using the "as a Brazilian" meme to prove Woody is more popular in Brazil. The post (shown below, left) received roughly 1,900 likes and 21 retweets in a day.
On September 31st, 2023, X[4] user @comunadememes shared the werecapybara artwork paired with an ironic copypasta meme featuring a series of requests to Brazil's President Lula da Silva. The tweet (shown below, right), garnered over 6,000 likes and 1,100 retweets in five months,
