Overheard is a series of websites where people can submit snippets of conversations they have heard in passing. There are several spin off versions of Overheard based on geographic areas and specialized locations, including the office and the beach.
History
The first Overheard site, Overheard in New York[1], was created in 2003 by developer Morgan Friedman.[2]
As of 2012, Overheard in New York has eleven editors.[6]
Precursor In Passing
The now defunct site In Passing began in 2000[3]. Based in Berkeley, California, they also collected comments and conversation snippets heard in passing. Separated by categories including funny, bizarre, ironic, and wisdom, users were able to submit their own stories, comment on others, or leave messages in their guestbook. By 2004, the site had stopped posting regularly[4] and had ceased to exist by 2008.[5]
Spinoffs
Overheard has several spinoffs including Everywhere[7], in the Office[8], and at the Beach.[9]
