Artists Take To Twitter To See If They Can Improve Botched Virgin Mary Painting

Late last week, yet another classic piece of art was hilariously ruined by an amateur art restorer. This time, it was "The Immaculate Conception Of Los Venerables", a painting of the Virgin Mary by Bartolomé Esteban Murillo, turned into a poor, DeviantArt-esque smudgy mess by a furniture restorer.

While the botched restoration was simultaneously tragic for art lovers and hilarious for everyone else, some Twitter users felt they could have done a better job at restoring the painting. Royal Academy tweeted a blank template version of "The Immaculate Conception," inviting other users to try their hand at improving the piece.

The responses ran the gamut as people put everything from pop culture characters to other famously ugly artworks on the painting.
