On March 19th, 2024, TikTok user @callmebkbk posted a video in which they responded to another user's argument that encountering a man in the woods was less scary than encountering a bear. In his response, @callmebkbk @callmebkbk argued that some man could do worse things to a woman than a bear. Later that day, TikTok user @thottimami69420 also posted a TikTok based on the question from the previous video, replying that she would pick a bear and explaining her reasoning.

You see, for a man the question "Is there anything worse than death?" is debatable, but it's not debatable for women.

When Did The Bear vs. Man Debate Go Viral?

While several other users on TikTok made videos about the question in late March 2024, the debate did not become fully viral until April 10th, 2024, when TIkTok account @screenshothq posted a street interview video in which several women were asked the question. Out of eight women in the video, seven replied that they would pick a bear over a man, with only one going for the other option. The video went viral, garnering over 14 million views on TikTok in three weeks.

The video was followed by viral reactions on TikTok, with more users giving their answers and reasoning behind them, and reacting to the interview video, and with an apparent majority of women agreeing that picking a bear is a safer option.

Moreover, in late April, the discourse moved over to X / Twitter, where more users shared their opinions on the matter.

What Are Women Saying About Choosing A Bear Over A Man?

Those who replied that they would rather be stuck with a bear than a man in the woods have provided various reasons for their choice, but some points were made by multiple users. Many women expressed fear that some men could do worse things to them than getting mauled by bear, listing sexual assault and kidnapping among them. Others pointed out that bears are more predictable than men, as their behavior is commanded by instinct.
