Overview

Social Media Executive Order refers the possible executive order being drafted by the Trump administration to address anti-conservative bias by social media companies. This action follows the July 2019 White House Social Media Summit which Facebook and Twitter executives were not invited to.

Background

On August7th, 2019, Politico reported on "a proposed executive order that would address allegations of anti-conservative bias by social media companies." The report refers to three anonymous White House Officials who all confirm the draft is circulating the White House. One official reportedly stated,

"If the internet is going to be presented as this egalitarian platform and most of Twitter is liberal cesspools of venom, then at least the president wants some fairness in the system,” the White House official said. “But look, we also think that social media plays a vital role. They have a vital role and an increasing responsibility to the culture that has helped make them so profitable and so prominent."

Notable Developments

On August 8th, 2019, John McAfee posted a video to Twitter addressing the possible order saying Jack Dorsey has yet to ban him despite his conservative views (shown below). The tweet gained over 1,200 likes and 200 retweets in a day. Media Outlets like Vox,[2] The Verge[3] and Business Insider[4] all reported on the matter.
