Gay People Are Like “She Saved My Life” is a catchphrase used as a punchline in jokes about LGBTQ+ people unusual fondness for atypical characters and figures, usually mentioning memorable villains from TV shows and movies. The trend started in early March 2024 on Twitter / X.
Origin
On March 7th, 2024, X[1] user @LouisPeitzman replied to a tweet joking about a 90's infomercial called "Magic Bullet System," saying "Gay people are like “she saved my life” and it’s Hazel from the Magic Bullet infomercial." The post (shown below) amassed more than 2,100 likes and 458 retweets in a week.
Spread
Over the week after the tweet went viral, people on X started to retweet the original post with other memorable characters or personalities loved by the LGBTQ+ community. For example, on March 10th, 2024, X[2] user @EldritchSpider posted the "Gay people are like 'she saved my life'" catchphrase paired with a picture of Dr. Wong-Staal, the doctor who unlocked the mystery of HIV as the cause of AIDS. The post (shown below, left) amassed more than 16,000 likes and 3,600 retweets in three days.
On the same day, X[3] user @bussywrecker tweeted the catchphrase alongside pictures of American actress Jessica Lange in her role as Fiona Goode from season three of American Horror Story. The post (shown below, right) received roughly 12,000 likes and 2,700 retweets in three days.
