S/he is more or less tricked into wearing a maid costume as part of training. It is confirmed that Yukimura is female, but for some reason she was tricked into believing she is male. From very early on in the series it is confirmed that Ruka is a guy even though he is "more effeminate than any girl". Due to his appearance, he is bullied and harassed a lot. During the course of the series Ruka asks Okabe to allow him to manipulate time so that he could be born as a girl. This works. However, because of the way that the story unfolds, this series of events is undone and Ruka goes back to being a guy.
