“One Thing” comes from a commercial for Toys R Us, which first aired on September 25, 1999. In the commercial, the characters of Oliver has his parents over for getting one thing in a confused commercial on the “Ice Dance” theme song (shown below). The entire store, as per the trope, does not go according to plan, as Oliver chooses the entire store, leading him to find out the truth about entire store through elaborate and increasingly unbelievable series of tricks. After choosing the entire store and telling Oliver that he’s getting “I need a really big bag” for the entire store, Oliver attempts to convince his parents that what he had prepared “one thing” for entire store, an expression for the big bag, he says, which is filmed in New Jersey.
Oliver's Dad: Okay, Oliver! You'll get one thing!
Oliver: I need a really big bag!
