The contest was aimed at people who are unable to program, and had an idea for the game that would not be made under normal circumstances and this was clearly labeled as "Any woman regardless of skill age or experience can submit an IDEA." They would then be paired with experienced professional in the industry so they could present the idea The creator had to provide their idea under creative commons and this was explictly said in the application form and in the contest rule This is not new, in Canada for instance the CMF will run funds where they can own up to 50% of a production, and thus be entitled to 50% of the profits for the production that they push back into their non profit (In this case the CMF which is used to fund further project.) We simply took a larger percentage and require significantly less upfront over head (I.E. None), and less experience. Valve runs contests where people design props for TF2 and the profits are donated in part to non profits and private individuals. And the Humble Indie Bundle does pay what you want charity drives continually. The only way to get the answers we want and the only way to create a productive dialogue about the massive issues in games journalism is to make our voices heard. In person. PAX is coming up at the end of the month and all the big figures of gaming will be there as part of their jobs. This page is proposing a protest against nepotism in video games journalism. WHAT YOU CAN DO If you are in the Seattle area and do not have a PAX pass Make signs and peacefully protest outside of the PAX venue, the Washington State Convention Center (at the corner of 7th Ave and Pike St.) from August 29th - September 1st. Protest. We're going to have a protest. Accusations of corruption and censorship in popular video game media have spread all over the internet, with no solution or action being taken. The only way to get the answers we want and the only way to create a productive dialogue about the massive issues in games journalism is to make our voices heard. In person. PAX is coming up at the end of the month and all the big figures of gaming will be there as part of their jobs. This page is proposing a protest against nepotism in video games journalism. WHAT YOU CAN DO If you are in the Seattle area and do not have a PAX pass Make signs and peacefully protest outside of the PAX venue, the Washington State Convention Center (at the corner of 7th Ave and Pike St.) from August 29th - September 1st. FRIDAY, AUGUST 29 TH-5 PM SATURDAY, AUGUST 30TH NOON SUNDAY, AUGUST31ST-NOON If you are going to PAX Ask members of the media and relevant devs showcasing their games questions and voice your concerns in a respectful way (let's all have a good time at an event we've been looking forward to). They care about the game industry and it is in everyone's best interest to improve games journalism. Make t-shirts or pin a sign on your cosplay expressing that you want accountability and transparency in games journalism. Since you'll be on location, you can also join the protest as you leave the venue for dinner (Friday) or lunch (Saturday and Sunday). Else Spread the news using the Twitter hashtag #gamesournalism or #kotaku or whatever other hashtag that spawns as this whole mess goes viral Why This is Important Games journalism is ignoring this because all criticism is coming online, where you can just block people, close threads and issue copyright take down requests. This can't be done in person. Furthermore, real journalism outlets (like the local news) will take note of this crisis and will be sure to report a protest at a video game convention, which will inevitably spread across the media. Having the real media confront game journalists is the best way to point out the glaring differences in ethical standards. This juxtaposition is what we need to truly see the difference in professional conduct To be clear this is about creating a set of standards for games journalism. Video games is a multibillion dollar industry and it is imperative that its consumers are able to trust the journalism that reports on it. However this reporter-audience relationship comes into question when journalists and the subjects of their writing are mingling closely at industry events or are not upfront about their connections We need relationships disclosed. We need a code of conduct. We need integrity and transparency in games reporting and advertising. You know, like real journalism in virtually any other field. Any efforts to get this story out online has been squashed and censored. This is because the very outlets we expect to provide news of this level are directly involved and implicated.
