Just stop! The best colour shoe with navy pants is burgundy (sometimes called Oxblood, but that sounds sorta gross). A chestnut brown will do, but burgundy is best. It looks elegant and sophisticated. You will impress your boss, your in-laws, your girlfriend, your boyfriend. Everyone. Even better, go for the double monk strap (as illustrated). And be sure to keep them looking good. A quick 20-second wipe with a $5 shoe-polish sponge (available at any drugstore) will keep them smart. OK haters. Come at me! <

Why even bother posting it?

Program in a three-day delay before sending a polite rejection email, just to make it seem legit. Crazy? Like a fox, maybe. Consider: this way, the only candidates to get attention will be those resourceful and motivated enough to circumvent the "front door" application process, or those referred by a mutual, or those presented by a trusted recruiter who already knows my needs and has fully vetted the candidate not just for technical "check the box" requirements but for personality and culture fit. I'm pretty sure this would be more effective than trusting an ATS to match keywords, or tasking an "economical" low-level clerk to sift through résumés for positions that pay three or four times what he or she makes. (Might get a lot of hate mail on this one. I'm not being entirely facetious. And yes, I understand that there are hiring situations in which this would be stupid... just not the situations I deal with in my sector.) Oh, and I do have other, perhaps less nasty, ideas for how to cope with the Firehose of Applications™ problem. Maybe another post sometime. 13 22 comments
