No college courses completed. No documentary features. No awards. "How do you *do* that?!" I asked from across the dining table, "how are you able to go through a whole year without doing any of these sort of things and be OK?" He didn't have a response. There is so much to unpack and learn from an exchange like this. Specifically-what's standing in the way of MY ability to be content without conventional markers of accomplishment? My gut says that this is a question that many people, namely high- performing women, grapple with too. I don't have an answer, but I'm curious what your thoughts are: Could you go a year without a single new certification, interview, award, promotion and be OK with yourself for it? But it's only the first two that matter. Whenever you take any action, the only thing I ask is, "does this add to my bottom line?" If the answer is no, I stop doing it. Simple. I haven't washed my hands since 2017, saving a valuable 3 seconds that I was wasting every bathroom trip. While you're out there worrying about so-called "clean hands", I'm choosing profit. The other day she wanted Twizzlers for breakfast. Trying to be a responsible parent, I told her it was too early to eat Twizzlers. I gave her a range of other offerings - yogurt, fruit, toast, bacon. All of the options were vehemently rejected. Instead, she waited 3 hours without eating anything. At 11 am she marched into my office and declared that it was now late enough in the day to have Twizzlers. I was annoyed, but simultaneously proud. Victorious, she ate an entire bag of wonderful red licorice as her reward. To get what she wanted, she needed patience and endurance (literally, she was hungry for hours). She waited for the opportune moment to make her point and when that time came, she pounced. She was bold. Her boldness. paid off. Many women are taught at a young age that boldness is a weakness for them. I am here to tell you that it is a strength. It is what will enable you to get things done. It will evoke change. It will get you Twizzlers. Be bold. Encourage boldness in girls and women. A bold woman may be considered a pain, but she makes the future bright.
