Super Mario
Porcupuffer's true origin
![Supper Mario Broth @MarioBrothBlog Despite appearing to be a simple portmanteau of "porcupine" and "pufferfish", the Porcupuffer enemy is actually a reference to the Porcupo enemy from Super Mario Bros. 2. This is entirely obfuscated in the English version, but can be seen clearly in the original Japanese. At first glance, the name of the Porcupuffer enemy appears to be an extremely straightforward portmanteau of "porcupine" and "pufferfish", two spiky animals. |+ ? porcupine pufferfish Porcupuffer However, the name is actually a deeper reference to a preexisting Mario enemy, Porcupo from Super Mario Bros. 2. To determine that this is indeed the case, we have to examine the original Japanese name of the Porcupuffer: + ! Porcupo ハリマンネン Harimannen roughly "ten-thousand-year hedgehog" pufferfish フグ fugu Porcupuffer フグマンネン Fugumannen roughly "ten-thousand-year pufferfish" In Japanese, the name of the Porcupo has nothing to do with porcupines, and is instead a bizarre phrase that is a portmanteau of X (harinezumi, "hedgehog") and 5 (mannen, "ten thousand years" or "eternity"). Note also that Super Mario World brought back Pokeys and Ninjis, who previously had also only appeared in Super Mario Bros. 2, fitting this specific reference with the rest of the game. While the English name actually did keep the reference, it was completely obfuscated by the fact that a portmanteau with "porcupine" and "Porcupo" are indistinguishable from each other. This also explains why the Porcupuffer is purple.](https://i.kym-cdn.com/photos/images/masonry/002/654/247/5e0.png)

Reference or coincidence?
![Supper Mario Broth @MarioBrothBlog In Super Mario All-Stars + Super Mario World, Luigi's sprites seem to reference, either coincidentally or intentionally, two common misconceptions about Mario's sprites from Super Mario Bros.: that he spits fireballs from his mouth, and that he hits bricks with his head. At the time of the release of Super Mario Bros., these were some of the common misconceptions about Mario's sprites and animations featured in that game: HOCH Many players thought Mario was spitting fireballs from his mouth instead of throwing them. This is due to Mario lifting his hand up at an odd angle to throw the fireballs (caused by graphical limitations; extending his arm further forward would have broken out of the 16x32 pixel sprite boundary and required additional resources). The artwork shows the correct interpretation. Another misconception was that Mario hit bricks with his head instead of with his hand. Only by looking closely at the sprite can we see that his hand is actually 2 pixels above his head, which was hard to see on CRT TVs at the time. The artwork shows the correct interpretation. In Super Mario All-Stars + Super Mario World, Luigi received a new set of sprites with original animations not used in his other appearances which seem to play on these misconceptions: Here, Luigi actually spits fireballs from his mouth. He puts his arms down and opens his mouth, whereupon the fireball emerges from it. Whether these have been chosen specifically to reference the misconceptions or whether this is merely a notable coincidence is unknown He also hits bricks with his head, by keeping his arms down while jumping.](https://i.kym-cdn.com/photos/images/masonry/002/648/721/77e.png)
