Supper Mario Broth @MarioBrothBlog Despite appearing to be a simple portmanteau of "porcupine" and "pufferfish", the Porcupuffer enemy is actually a reference to the Porcupo enemy from Super Mario Bros. 2. This is entirely obfuscated in the English version, but can be seen clearly in the original Japanese. At first glance, the name of the Porcupuffer enemy appears to be an extremely straightforward portmanteau of "porcupine" and "pufferfish", two spiky animals. |+ ? porcupine pufferfish Porcupuffer However, the name is actually a deeper reference to a preexisting Mario enemy, Porcupo from Super Mario Bros. 2. To determine that this is indeed the case, we have to examine the original Japanese name of the Porcupuffer: + ! Porcupo ハリマンネン Harimannen roughly "ten-thousand-year hedgehog" pufferfish フグ fugu Porcupuffer フグマンネン Fugumannen roughly "ten-thousand-year pufferfish" In Japanese, the name of the Porcupo has nothing to do with porcupines, and is instead a bizarre phrase that is a portmanteau of X (harinezumi, "hedgehog") and 5 (mannen, "ten thousand years" or "eternity"). Note also that Super Mario World brought back Pokeys and Ninjis, who previously had also only appeared in Super Mario Bros. 2, fitting this specific reference with the rest of the game. While the English name actually did keep the reference, it was completely obfuscated by the fact that a portmanteau with "porcupine" and "Porcupo" are indistinguishable from each other. This also explains why the Porcupuffer is purple.
