In Super Mario 3D World, as in many other Mario games, Question Blocks use a "progressive power-up system"; e.g. if Mario is Small Mario, the block will dispense a Super Mushroom when hit. If he is already Super Mario, it will dispense a second-order power-up like a Super Bell. However, when using the touch cursor (touching the Wii U GamePad in the Wii U version/ touching the Switch screen or using R in the Switch version) to interact with the Question Block, it will always dispense the second-order power-up even if the character is still small. As such, it is always preferable to touch Question Blocks rather than hit them. Note: in multiplayer mode, the Question Block will dispense one progressive power-up per hit and one second-order power-up per touch, for a total equaling the number of players. For example, if playing with Small Mario and Super Luigi, hitting the block twice will produce a Super Mushroom and Super Bell, but touching it twice will produce two Super Bells. As such, it is still always preferable to touch the blocks.
