Why Brawl is a Bad Game

Although I enjoyed Brawl when it launched, the novelty wore off after a couple of months and I was put off from it for several reasons, eventually dropping it and going to back to Melee/64 Mechanically, it's almost unquestionably the poorest of any Smash. Combos simply don't happen in the game. Hitstun can be cancelled almost entirely by making an airdodge or aerial attack immediately after getting hit. Not only is it nearly impossible to link moves together, you can also cancel a lot of your momentum from getting launched, causing people to live up to extreme percentages. The physics in the game are also a step down from Melee - everything is rather slow and sluggish, not helped by a 10-frame input buffer than makes your inputs a lot less precise. The biggest issue with engine is that momentum does not exist in this platformer-fighter, so running into a jump cancels all your ˋ - running momentum, meaning only your air control speed dictates your speed when jumping-it's really easy to notice on fast characters like Falcon or Sonic and is very Jarring You think the company that published Super Mario Bros would know something about momentum in platformers. Also, tripping- 'nuff said All of the above combined creates a game that's overall more slower and sluggish than it's predecessors. Combined with strong shields with minimal stun, powerful rolls, and infinite airdodges, you get a game that greatly favors overly-defensive play But what about Brawl's content? One of the biggest arguments for Brawl is the content. SSE can get boring pretty fast if all you're doing is spamming smash attacks and aerials with little thought. Of course the content itself isn't all that much better than Melee's, and somehow worse in some aspects. Starting with the main single-player modes, Classic isn't quite as good as Melee's, since there's a lot less randomness and less minigames, giving less replayability. SSE was also rather underwhelming. Rather than improve on Melee's Adventure mode by creating more levels and enemies based on more Nintendo properties, we mostly got OC donut steel enemies and generic level designs (forest, secret lab, caves, etc). Now most of that wasn't really too bad, but then, halfway through SSE, the Great Maze shows up - now go play all the levels again but with some small changes. The worst bit of padding Ive ever experienced in a game and it really dragged the experience for me - I resorted to using a walkthrough for the my first time going through the maze because I didn't want to put any effort into exploring. As a final note, Event Matches were also pretty dull - not as many in total and less unique scenarios than Melee's. All-in-all, the major single-player modes are either underwhelming or just disappointing The minigames available are quite a bit shallower than Melee's. Target Test removed the unique stages for each character and only provided 5 generic ones of certain "difficulties". Home-Run Contest added the shield, meaning you're less mindful of how you rack up damage since the sandbag rarely ever leave the platform. They also removed Race to the Finish. The only minigame that was improved was Multi-Man fights since they added extra character types However, the most important elements of any Smash game's content is the stages and characters. Quite a few stages are rather gimmicky in the game. There's an abundance of walk-off stages, invasive hazards, and lots of gimmicks that just impede on normal gameplay. It should be noted that there are only 6 legal stages in competitive play - just as much a Melee despite having more overall As for characters, while most of them are pretty fun to play with, the game probably has the worst balance of any Smash game. You know the "fox only" meme? Meta Knight is more OP than Fox ever was in Melee. Probably the only character that can get combos, has transcendent priority on nearly ALL his attacks (meaning he always out prioritizes other moves he clashes with), has the best recovery in the game by far and is the only character with proper edge options. Most other characters only get the the top of the tier through character-specific gimmicks like infinite grabs or the like. This is contrasted with Melee and 64, where good characters are those that simply perform better with the core mechanics, being judged mostly on their combo ability, recovery, spacing/movement options, etc. To sum this up you'll see M2K sandbagging in pools as Pichu, but you'll never see Zero sandbagging as Ganondorf So really, the content of Brawl doesn't really save it either. Combined with its poor mechanics, I can very confidently say that Brawl is the worst entry of the series. There's nothing I can think of that Brawl does better than other Smash games - aside from maybe having more undiscovered tech and gameplay quirks than any other Smash game, which is probably the only reason anyone every gave attention to Brawl competitively
