EGM Reviews Sonic the Hedgehog and Super Mario World
![These are the original Electronic Gaming Monthly reviews for Sonic the Hedgehog and Super Mario World, released in Issues #24 and #25 respectively. Note that both games have identical reviews, with 9/10's from everyone involved. From this publication at least, the first round of Sonic vs Mario is a tie.](https://i.kym-cdn.com/photos/images/masonry/002/498/447/159.png)

Blast Processing Letter & Reply
![Blast Processing was mostly a marketing term made to sell the Sega Genesis. To be fair, the Genesis CPU had a faster Clock Rate than the SNES, so the term could be referring to that, but Sega was never clear about what the term actually meant.](https://i.kym-cdn.com/photos/images/masonry/002/535/915/331.png)

Genesis Does
![Part of a 4-page advertisment from Issue #14 of Electronic Gaming Monthly (the September 1990 issue). Note that this advertisement was published during the period before Sonic the Hedgehog or the Super Nintendo Entertainment System were released in the USA.
Note that the two games being featured in the advertisement are Afterburner II and Super Monaco GP. These were ports of some of the biggest arcade games of the late 80's. Sega arcade ports were a major focus of the Sega Genesis, especially before the release of Sonic the Hedgehog. Other major arcade ports of this era included Altered Beast, Columns, Golden Axe, and Super Hang-On.
Much of this issue of EGM shows signs of uncertainty regarding the new 16-bit era of video game consoles. The Sega CD was still a rumor at this point, the Super Nintendo was announced and rumored to possibly be a 32-bit machine, and the TurboGrafX-16 was being given a lot more space in the magazine than veterans of the 16-bit console wars in the USA might have guessed.](https://i.kym-cdn.com/photos/images/masonry/002/497/627/83b.png)

Electronic Gaming Monthly Issue #16
![A classic "Genesis is better than Nintendo" advertisement from EGM #16. Ironically, the cover of this issue is for Super Mario World.
Note that of the 9 games being shown, 3 are arcade ports and 3 are sports games. The actual commercial reception of most Genesis games is a mystery, but these were two categories of games that did well on the Genesis. For example, Altered Beast alone sold over a million copies in the USA, and the last confirmed million-seller on Genesis that I can find was NFL '98, released in May 1997.
Note that EGM actually reviewed some of the games featured in this ad. Super Monaco GP got a score of 9.5/10, Moonwalker a 7.0/10, and Dynamite Duke got a 5.25/10.](https://i.kym-cdn.com/photos/images/masonry/002/497/977/a2e.png)
