"What's Poppin'" is a song by American rapper Jack Harlow. Released in 2020, the song became a popular sound on video-sharing application TikTok in which participants act out the song's lyrics ("What's poppin? Don't mind me just watching") in a variety of comedic sketches.
Origin
On January 21st, 2020, the YouTube account Lyrical Lemonade shared a music video for the song. The post received more than 100,000 views in less than one year (shown below).
On March 13th, 2020, Jack Harlow released the album Sweet Action in the United States.[1] The first track on the album is "What's Poppin."
Spread
Following the release of the album, the song continued to see success on TikTok, where users added the song as the soundtrack to their videos. For example, on March 30th, 2020, TikToker @yfnzay posted a video about being hearing impaired that used the song. The post received more than 2 million views and 30,000 comments in less than one year (shown below, left).
Two days later, on April 1st, TikToker Charli D'amelio shared a video set to the song. The post received more than 5.5 million reactions and 1,000 comments in less than one year (shown below, right).
As of December 2020, more than 350,000 videos used the song.[2]
