About

"X Dances to" Gimmick Pages refers to novelty social media pages which post memes based on a single video in which a certain character either dances or does a dance-like move, combining it with various songs. A popular meme format on Facebook since 2018, in 2020 the meme gained larger presence online through with the launch of multiple X Dances to Twitter pages. The format is also known as Same Video Set to Different Songs and, among Spanish users, as X Bailando Diferentas Canciones.

Origin

The earliest examples of a single video being combined with various songs are YouTube fads in early 2010s. While the earliest such fad is unknown, one of the earliest examples is Kiko Bailando X fad which a dancing scene from 1970s Mexican El Chavo was combined with various songs for humorous purposes. The trend achieved significant popularity in mid-2006 (examples[1][2] shown below).

Other early examples include Dancing Spider-Man and Rapper Mario clip, which were combined with various songs between 2006 and 2008 (examples[3][4][5] shown below)

The gimmick page trend started in June 2018. On June 27th, 2018, following the viral spread of a video of a "triforce" triangle from The Legend of Zelda: The Light of Courage set to "Battle Mario & Luigi Super Star Saga Music Extended" (shown below), Facebook group El Mismo Triángulo Bailando Con Diferentes Canciones (sp. "The Same Triangle Dancing To Different Songs") was launched. The group has since been deleted.

Spread

On June 27th, 2018, El Mismo Triángulo Bailando Con Diferentes Canciones posted its first video, with Dancing Triangle set to "Snakey Chantey" from Donkey Kong Country 2. Within three weeks, the post received over 640 reactions and 550 shares.

In the following weeks, the group reached viral popularity in the Spanish-speaking community on Facebook, with more groups following the meme format being created in the following weeks. On July 17th, 2018, Facebook group "Junior y su hermano juniorsito bailando diferentes canciones" was created, accumulating over 365,000 followers in two years. On July 20th, 2018, Facebook group "El mismo video de Homero en 3D bailando rolas æsthetic" was launched, gaining over 394,000 followers in two years. On August 24th, 2018, the first English-speaking gimmick group of this format, "The same video of a russian kid dancing different songs," was launched, accumulating over 286,000 followers in the same period.

The format maintained significant popularity on Facebook in the following years, with multiple groups utilizing the meme format being created. The format did not see active representation on Twitter until early Summer 2020, when "X Dances To" accounts started gaining popularity on the platform. For example, in June 2020, Chibi Naoto dancing to different songs every day (@VibinNaoto) Twitter account was launched. In July 2020, Mario Headbangs To (@MarioHeadbangs) was created.

In the following months, multiple gimmick pages following the meme format were created on Twitter.
