Tony Soprano Crying To refers to a series of videos in which Tony Soprano from The Sopranos is driving in a car and crying to music. In parodies, the music Tony is listening to is changed. The majority of the parodies have been collected by Twitter account @TonySopranoCry.

Origin

On March 6th, 2021, TikTok^[1] user @TheGayChingy posted a video in which Tony Soprano is crying in a car to "Suteki Da Ne" from Final Fantasy X. The original scene comes from season 4, episode 17 of The Sopranos, and features Tony listening to "Oh Girl" by The Chi Lites.^[2] The video did not spread far on TikTok, but @TheGayChingy reposted the video to their Twitter account the same day, where it gained over 7,400 views, 80 retweets, and 310 likes (shown below).

Spread

The following day, TheGayChingy created the gimmick Twitter account @TonySopranoCry^[3] to compile other remixes of the scene. The account gained over 8,000 followers in three days. There, the account mostly posts remixes using indie rock songs and songs from Japanese media, such as Baka Mitai (examples shown below).

The account inspired others to contribute to the meme. On March 9th, Twitter user @Pepegamonke posted an example set to Guts' Theme, gaining over 100 retweets and 200 likes (shown below, top). User @isntwhatmatters set the scene to "All I Need" by Radiohead, gaining over 700 likes (shown below, bottom). The meme was covered by The AV Club.^[4]
