It Would Seem Even Nintendo Doesn't Think Anyone Still Wants To Play 'Super Smash Bros. Wii U'

It's been nearly four weeks since Nintendo sent the competitive Smash community into a panic announcing strict guidelines and licensing measures the company would require in order for tournament organizers to host competitive events. Considering the community's icy relationship with Nintendo, some believed it could be a death knell for competitive Smash.

Luckily, that hasn't come to pass, as it appears Nintendo is easily and quickly giving out licenses to tournament organizers who have applied thus far. Yesterday, the community got more good news as Nintendo released their application form, giving organizers a handy list of games they could select for their tournament. The biggest news is that Super Smash Brothers Melee is on that list, given that Nintendo has historically clamped down on Melee due to the community's use of mods in order to play the 20-year-old game online.

In fact, tournament organizers can apply for a license to run any of the Smash games — except, curiously, Super Smash Bros. Wii U.

Much has been said about how the Wii U wasn't exactly Nintendo's most successful console, and Smash Wii U, or Smash 4, was certainly not one of the game's most beloved competitive titles. The game's floaty mechanics and the overpowered combos of Bayonetta specifically have made it an infamous era in competitive Smash history. It's unclear why Nintendo didn't include Smash 4 among Smash titles it will grant its blessing to tournament organizers to run, but the omission was glaring and also very funny to Smash players who still have ill will towards the title.

UltimaShadowX joke. georgeOD's take.

Overall, Nintendo's October guidelines update, once seen as a potential competitive Smash killer, may actually help the community — save for those who still want to play Smash 4.
